“Exgay” is a discredited notion
In your Feb. 22 editorial [“Grounding fliers: Public schools need to phase out distribution of advocacy materials”] you correctly lay out some of the factors that the Board of Education will need to consider on this issue of whether to continue the school flier distribution program in light of the problems created by the recent distributions of a group calling itself Parents and Friends of ExGays and Gays (PFOX). Indeed, at their Feb. 13 meeting, the board members were certainly asking all the right questions.
We appreciate your effort to be evenhanded in your editorial. You note that BOE member Phil Kauffman "said many students found the contents of the PFOX flier hurtful." Then you add that, "Some students also might have found the flier's contents helpful."
It is hard to see how the latter could have been the case.
